Abstract : A counting system has been assembled for the determination of circulating radioisotope activity by means of external measurement of the ventral surface of the wrist. The system was tested on one patient by performing a ferrokinetics study with 59Fe, in which both the external counting system and the normal blooddrawing procedure were used. The external counting system proved to be unsuitable for measurement of plasma iron clearance, but was able to measure accurately the percentage uptake of iron into new red cells. The use of the external counting system eliminates the need for 10 of the venipunctures and 70 ml. of blood. (Author)
