Abstract : Raman scattering has been observed from the hydroxyl ion in NaCl, Kcl, and KBr crystals. The measurements were made using an argon ion laser as a light source and a tandem double monochromator with photoelectric detection. A Raman emission attributed to the stretching motion of the OH9(-) ion was seen in all samples. The stretching bands in KBr:OH(-) and KCl:OH(-) showed no resolvable structure. However, at 15 K, the stretching band in NaCl:OH(-) appeared to be composed of two lines separated by about 2.8/cm. RRaman scattering from the stretching level of OD(-) doped NaCl was observed whereas no corresponding infrared absorption has been seen. (Author)
