Abstract : The closo-carborane, C2B5H7, reacts rapidly with Cl2 in the presence of AlCl3 to form HCl and 4-ClC2B5H6. The reaction without AlCl3 is accelerated by light forming, in addition to the 4-isomer, 1-ClC2B5H6 and 2-ClC2B5H6. The identity and structure of the new compounds are indicated by their mass spectra and 11B nmr spectra. A trans effect is observed in the 11B nmr of the 1-chloro derivative and reciprocal effects are observed in all compounds. (Author)
