Abstract : The effect of moving striations on the performance of a gas laser is studied. A traveling periodic stratification in dielectric constant is shown to separate each resonant cavity mode into a multi-tone spectrum. Verification of this theory is provided by an experimental study of the spectra of the output of a helium-neon laser in the LF, RF and optical frequency ranges. (Author)
