Abstract : The electric-field-induced birefringence (i.e., the Kerr effect) was measured for a series of liquids in which molecular redistribution is expected to be the dominant factor and values for B/B(CC14) of 2.4, 1.89, 0.79 and 0.68 are found for SnC14, SiBr4, Si(C2H5)4 and Si(CH3)4, respectively. In our determinations null measurements are made of the test fluid relative to CC14 using a crossed polarizer system, a stable laser source, and a sensitive phase lock receiver as a null detector. Fluid turbulence and minute particles were found to limit sensitivity to 10 to the -6th power radians when the turbulence-free theoretical limit was 10 to the -7th power radians. With this sensitive apparatus careful temperature measurements of (t/B) db/dT have been made; these are important in the careful temperature measurements of (t/B) dB/dT have been made; these are important in the verification of the redistribution effect. Kerr data are also tabulated for several organotin compounds, although purity and long term stability of these compounds was not on a level with that for the above mentioned. To permit comparison to literature values, where they exist, we have also measured CC14 relative to asymmetric molecule liquids such as benzene and carbon disulphide. (Author)
