Abstract : A nearshore instrument system has been developed which monitors effectively the wave and current parameters associated with the transition of breaking waves in shallow water. This system consists of a conventional step resistance wave staff plus two new instruments; a ducted impellor flowmeter and an instantaneous celerity, angle of approach, and fluid flow velocity. Several systems can be employed in a network to monitor both the spatial and temporal variations in these parameters. A resistance type bottom profiling sled is also described which can be used to determine bathymetric profiles within the nearshore zone. The instrumentation is simple and inexpensive to construct.
