Abstract : Real English is a translator from English to a symbolic, computer-oriented language which allows its user to query a data bank in the language most natural to him. Real English was designed to operate in a time-sharing environment, in conjunction with a generalized information retrieval system. It consists of a syntactic component, which provides a 'string analysis' of an input request, a semantic component which determines what information the user is requesting, and a command formatting component, which composes symbolic information retrieval requests of the sort accepted by the information retrieval system.
