Abstract : From the observation that in papers made from moderately beaten stock a certain distance of separation between the surfaces of fracture is needed before the break is complete, it was predicted and shown that for short strip lengths the stress-strain curve of paper does not fall immediately from the point of maximum stress to zero stress. Using this phenomenon of 'non-immediate rupture' it was possible to obtain values for the fracture energy per unit crack length. It was found that these values compare well with those obtained using Corte's extrapolation to zero length method. An examination of the effects of rate of straining and relative humidity on the fracture energy was also made. (Author)
