Abstract : In Part I the behaviour of structural elements of the beta-arylether type twards neutral sulphite solutions under the conditions of neutral sulphite cooking has been studied using appropriate model compounds. It has been found that the main reactions involved are: Cleavage of the beta9-arylether bond in phenolic phenylpropane units with formation of the corresponding styrene-omega-sulphonic acid structures and Cleavage of methylether bonds in phenolic and non-phenolic phenylpropane units with formation of methane sulphonic acid. The results are discussed with reference to known features of neutral sulphite pulping. Part II describes the behaviour of a cyclic benzylaryl ether, dihydro-dehydrodiisoeugenol, and its methyl ether, models of the dimeric units of the phenyl-coumaran type. (Author)
