Abstract : During the 1963-64 period, a system of automatic coding POLIZ was developed at the Computer Center of MGU for use with the 'Setun' computer. It was based on the Polish Inverse notation (Zapis) of algorithms (POLIZ) incorporating ideas advanced by the Polish mathematician Lukashevich for the bracketless writing of formulas. The present article describes the input language of such a system - SIMPOLIZ 64. It represents the Polish inverse notation in symbolic signs for which letters, numbers, and other auxiliary signs of the 'Setun' computer are utilized. The program, specified in such an input language, is not translated into machine language but is simply represented in the ternary code retaining the Polish inverse notation. This coding is accomplished automatically by means of a special program. Consequently, the POLIZ system of automatic coding consists of the input language SIMPOLIZ, the internal language INPOLIZ, programs of automatic coding AUTOKODIR POLIZ, and the operational system POLIZ comprising an interpreter and a library of subprograms realizing the elementary operations of the systems. The outline of the essence of the Polish inverse notation is followed by a detailed description of SIMPOLIZ 64.
