Abstract : Model experiments have shown that during neutral sulphite pulping alpha-arylether bonds in phenolic phenolic phenylcumaran lignin units are cleaved to form o,p'-dihydroxystilbene and alpha-sulphonic acid structures, while beta-arylether bonds in phenolic phenylpropane lignin units are cleaved to form styrene-omega-sulphonic acid structures. Hydroxymethyl groups linked to the beta-carbon atom are eliminated as formaldehyde, and, to a small extent, aromatic methoxyl groups are eliminated as methane sulphonic acid. Striking analogies were found with the lignin reactions which occur during Kraft cooking, whereas basic differences were observed compared with acid sulphite cooking. The results are discussed with regard to known phenomena of neutral sulphite cooking such as limited lignin dissolution and the formation of characteristic chromophoric systems. (Author)
