Abstract : A far infrared line scanner mounted in a P2E aircraft was used in a series of tests designed to provide quantitative data on the limits of detectablity of certain small craft under controlled conditions as a function of time of day, altitude, and slant range for currently available equipment. The test data agreed reasonably well with crude theoretical calculations. Under suitable conditions small craft can be detected by infrared scanners at ranges comparable to those at which they can be detected by eye, except that the infrared detection range is not diminished by darkness per se.
