Abstract : The high search rate of aircraft radar against surface targets plus the protective cover of the ocean has greatly accelerated submarine warfare. Underwater sound provides the chief means for the detection of submerged targets in both offensive and defensive warfare. The transmission of sound in a variable medium and some of the gross features of the ocean as an acoustic medium are briefly described in the following paragraphs. (Author)
