Abstract : A process for the preparation of SiC-on-tungsten fibers, was investigated. The process uses, instead of conventional vapor deposition, the mass transport associated with film boiling on an incandescent wire while submerged in a liquid reactant. The diameter of the deposit was used as a measure of the mass transport rate. Analyses of rates were made in both the kinetic limited regime and the diffusion limited regime. Variables investigated were concentration of the plating solution, voltage applied across the filament and position on the filament. The results obtained for mass transport rates were quite analogous to those obtained for heat transfer rates during film boiling and to heat transfer rates during free convection of a gas. (Author)
