Abstract : The report covers a two year program to perform feasibility study of constructing a solid state device capable of converting an infrared image produced by 10.6 micron CO2 laser radiation into a visible image. Three approaches were investigated based on (1) quantum counter principle, (2) selective thermal radiation and (3) thermographic detection using hydrated crystals. The major difficulty encountered in the course of the investigation of the quantum counter principle was in matching the signal frequency to the separation of the energy levels involved in the scheme. Very encouraging results were obtained from measurements of the transition probabilities determining potential quantum efficiency of the device. Application of the selective thermal radiators for the infrared imaging was thoroughly investigated. The obtained results are very useful and promising. Performance of the selective thermal radiators favorably competes and in many respects is superior to performance of the viewing screens made of other materials sensitive to thermal radiation. Thermographic screens made of hydrated salts were tested and their usefulness for imaging of weak infrared radiation was demonstrated. (Author)
