Abstract : Earlier works utilizing the integrated birefringent patterns in transmitted light are briefly reviewed. The method is extended to show that the maximum axial stress at notch root of shafts under axially symmetric loading could be obtained at ease from one observation in transmitted light at room temperature. Illustrative experiment was performed and the result was compared with Neuber's solution. The advantages of this method include, firstly, that no freezing nor slicing is required, and, secondly, that the experimentally obtained stress concentration factor is readily applicable in designs in three-dimension since the effect of Poisson's ratio is practically eliminated.
