Abstract : The optimal exhaust velocities of various future space missions are in the range of v = 20 to 30 km/s (Isp = 2000 to 3000 s). Classical ion thrusters may be operated at these velocities, but their power density is rather low. The present state of development of colloid thrusters is not comparable to that of other thrusters types. With Hall ion thrusters, high power densities are available, but additional power losses reduce somewhat their efficiency. Depending on the mission types future applications of these thruster types can be defined. (Author)
