Abstract : Intercalation of a rigid spin label into phospholipid films provides a new approach to obtaining information about the extent of orientation and motional freedom of the lipid components and the effects of cholesterol. The data obtained in such model systems will be useful in providing the background necessary to interpret results in biological systems where orientation effects have been observed. The observation that an adduct such as cholesterol can cause changes in the ESR spectra raises the possibility that the mode of action of other materials which are known to affect membrane properties, for example, antibiotics and anesthetics, could be studied using this technique.
