Abstract : The problem of detecting faults in fixed cell function arrays is studied. The study is naturally divided into two independent aspects: the problems of applying tests to each individual cell in an array and of progating the effect of an internal fault to observable outputs. These have been called the problems of test application and fault propagation respectively. The testability of an array depends on a successful solution to each of these problems. By the considerations of symmetry, duality, and permutation of interconnecting lines, it is shown how the cell functions can be partitioned into test-equivalent classes. It is then sufficient to determine the testability of only one representative from each class. Separate necessary and sufficient conditions are obtained for the test application problem. The fault propagation problem is studied for linear cascades but the results are shown to extendable to other modes of fault propagation. An evaluation of cell functions, based upon the testability of arrays formed from them, is possible by applying the results discussed in the report.
