Abstract : The one-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations are used to compute the unsteady structure of a shock wave reflecting from a wall. The shock wave is created by the accelerated motion of a piston into a gas initially at rest. The equations are solved by means of a time-dependent finite difference, second-order accurate scheme. A variable mesh is used to increase the accuracy of the computation and reduce the computation time. Results are presented for both an isothermal and an adiabatic wall. The technique is applicable to flows with Reynolds number between 10 and 1000. (Author)
