Abstract : The data on the variations of the speed of sound in the Atlantic Ocean off the Florida Coast is analyzed by removing the usually expected exponential depth variation and then statistically examining the random component of the sound velocity. The probability density function of the random variable is plotted, and other parameters such as the mean, variance, and autocorrelation are also calculated. Decorrelation depth is calculated for each data run and an attempt is made to completely specify the statistical characteristics of the random variations in the speed of sound for such a case.
