Abstract : Equipment for conducting a comprehensive experimental investigation of a novel method of signal-rate processing for transit detection was designed, constructed, and assembled. The present second-generation test equipment consists of three major segments: a time-scaled model of the signal processor, a broadband (400 MHz) noise generator whose amplitude can be modulated by a control voltage, and a transit simulator that generates a control voltage suitably tailored to make the time variation of the noise envelope simulate the variation of total signal power that would be received by a sensor during an actual source transit. The apparatus is elaborated to permit the controlling parameters to be varied over wide ranges, and the non-dimensional experimental variables are made available as direct-reading front-panel controls. Getting valid measures of detection and false-alarm probabilities within a reasonable time is facilitated by choosing a time-scaling factor (about 100,000) that allows a run of 10,000 transits to be completed within 30 seconds. The design rationale and alignment instructions are supplied in sufficient detail to qualify this document as an instruction manual for the use, repair, or duplication of the equipment. (Author)
