Abstract : The potential of the aluminum-graphite composite as a high strength to density and high modulus to density structural material is described, and a process for the infiltration of commercially available graphite yarns with aluminum alloys is mentioned. The microstructure of the infiltrated yarn shows that complete infiltration of the bundles of 7-microns-diam fibers by the aluminum alloy occurs during the infiltration process. Tensile tests show that the mechanical properties of the fibers are not degraded during infiltration with aluminum. Microexamination of the matrix-fiber interface shows that no significant interaction layer is present and indicates that a strong bond exists at the interface. (Author)
