Abstract : A study was performed to investigate the ignition and combustion characteristics of boron particles in a two chambered test system. Such an apparatus was used in recognition of the results of an examination of the experimental unknowns associated with the ignition and combustion of metal particles under the conditions characteristic of an augmented system. The results indicated it was essential to separate the mechanisms of the heat up phase from those of the ignition and combustion phase in the particles combustion history. The theoretical analyses, experimental equipment, operational techniques and experimental results obtained in this investigation are described.
