Abstract : The report is concerned with the incorporation of the axioms of quantum measurements into current communication estimation theory. It is well known that classical electromagnetic theory does not adequately describe fields at optical frequencies. The advent of the laser has made the use of optical carriers for information transmission practical. Classical communication estimation theory emphasizes background noise and channel fading as primary limitations on system performance. At optical frequencies, quantum effects may totally dominate performance. Estimation theory is formulated using the quantum theory so that this type of system limitation can be understood, and optimal receivers and systems designed. (Author)
