Abstract : Some of the mathematical tools needed for a theoretical study of the propagation of wavefronts in a gas in motion are derived. In mathematical terms, the study concerns itself with the characteristic manifolds of the partial differential equations governing gas dynamics in two spatial variables and the time; and also with the interior relations in these surfaces. Equations governing these wavefronts are derived, valid in four different coordinate systems -- plane Cartesian, cylindrical with axial symmetry, plane polar, spherical polar and axial symmetry. The interior relations are worked out in detail in one case. (Author)
