Abstract : An optical method is described by which the polarization characteristics, and thus the symmetry assignment, of the zero-field magnetic transitions can be determined in zero-field. In this method, the guest molecule being studied is dissolved in a single crystal of known structure. The oriented mixed crystal is placed inside a mocrowave helix in a position where the magnetic field along the helical axis is maximum, with one of the crystal axes being parallel to the helix axes. A relationship is derived which relates the changes in the phosphorescence intensity of the sample to the power of the microwave radiation that induces the magnetic transitions between the zero-field levels of the lowest triplet state.
