Abstract : The paper is concerned with determining in what sense the asymptotic behavior of the solutions of a certain class of differentialdifference equations of the neutral type is given from a knowledge of the solutions of the characteristic equation. The results are stated in terms of general functional differential equations which include differentialdifference equations. An application to perturbed linear equations is indicated by discussing the saddle point property for nonlinear autonomous systems. (Author)
