Abstract : A small-scale pilot study was conducted by having three subjects give confidence statements with respect to the successful performance of target shooting tasks. Data indicate that a confidence statement is a better predictor of future performance than is test performance itself. Further, a confidence statement is a better predictor of current test performance than is a success-failure prediction. Although these results are by no means definitive and do not have the realism and relevance of field studies with military personnel, analysis of the data indicates the possibility of considerable gain from the introduction of confidence measurement into performance testing programs.
