Abstract : This investigation presents the results of experimental and analytical studies on the static and fatigue behavior of orthotropic steel bridge decks with biserrated trapezoidal ribs. The typical structure consists of a deck plate with equally spaced and parallel ribs welded to the bottom side of deck plate. The rib plate is cut along paralleling serrations which provide alternating openings on the two opposite faces of the rib. In an effort to evaluate the behavioral patterns related to above aspects of the structure, seventeen single rib and five multiple rib specimens with number of ribs ranging from three to five were tested both under static and repeated loads. ASTM A36 steel was used throughout the investigation. AASHO wheel loadings were simulated in all tests. The actual deck was represented by an equivalent orthotropic plate, and a discrete element mathematical model was utilized in conjunction with finite difference equations in order to predict the elastic response of an orthotropic plate-grillage system. The prediction of ultimate capacities was made by the basic methods of plastic analysis. (Author)
