Abstract : Because of their strength and thermal properties, composite materials are becoming increasingly useful in many aerospace applications. One of the more interesting applications of composites is the use of their dispersive properties to reduce the damaging effects of stress pulses as they propagate through layers of composites. The work investigates one-dimensional propagation of a stress wave in a composite composed of alternating layers of two materials. The layers are inclined at an arbitrary angle to the direction of propagation, and an effective modulus theory is used to describe the physical properties of the medium. (Author)
