Abstract : The dental treatment needs and time-factors related to delivery of dental care were studied under conditions where all initial care had been completed on the crew of the battleship, USS NEW JERSEY (BB-62), prior to their reporting on board for duty. One-year follow up examinations indicated that out of 978 patients, 724 (74%) required some type of dental treatment ranging from emergency care for the relief of pain and infection to routine dental procedures such as restoration of carious teeth and periodontal treatment. Annual maintenance care requirements were determined on a 300 man sample of the men who required dental treatment. The sample group developed an average of 1.71 new caries lesions during the year and there were 0.79 restoration failures per man. Approximately 70% of the individuals who required some treatment could be returned to a 'no further treatment required' status in 1.5 - 2 hour dental appointments. (Author)
