Abstract : Elastic and piezoelectric surface wave propagation on trigonal crystals is investigaed. Propagation along the trigonal axis is chosen so that decoupling into a transverse mode and a Rayleigh mode will occur. It is demonstrated that the transverse mode cannot exist under the restriction that the decay constants be pure imaginary numbers. This restriction requires pure attenuation away from the propagation face. The Rayleigh wave is shown to exist as a generalized Rayleigh mode on LiNbO3. A numerical technique is employed to obtain detailed information about the particle displacement variation with depth in the material. Experimental work was performed to determine the propagation velocity on LiNbO3. The results of this work found the velocity to be 3520 m/sec.
