Abstract : A generalized plain strain analysis is derived and computerized for a system of N coaxial elastic shells imbedded in a full space elastic medium. The medium is subjected to a uniform static triaxial compressive loading which produces a uniaxial strain, the axis of which is inclined at an arbitrary angle to the cylindrical axis. The method provides a design analysis tool for assessing or parametrically investigating composite coaxial cylindrical liner configurations used in hardened facility design as functions of number of liner elements, their elastic properties, their thicknesses, and the medium stiffness. The static solution developed is useful in predicting liner element and medium peak stresses and deformations which would be produced dynamically by free field ground shock waveforms of wavelength long compared to the liner diameter. The analysis is most applicable to structures in rock medium which behave elastically in the hardness regime of interest. Numerical results are presented for a typical liner configuration. (Author)
