Abstract : Plastic deformation has been studied in a series of four compositions of alpha-brasses. Experiments were disigned to test the consistency of several indirect methods of determining the dislocation velocity-stress exponent, m*. Plastic zone propagation has been studies for the first time in f.c.c. materials and explained in terms of dislocation dynamics. The concept of activation area has been restricted to low temperature deformation. The applicability of this concept to high temperature deformation has been established. The activation areas for creep deformation have been calculated and examined in the light of many material and deformation variables. The activation areas for grain boundary sliding in Al, Pb, Sn, Zn, and Cu are compared with those for creep in the same materials. (Author)
