Abstract : Research was conducted to understand the dynamic magnetic characteristics of magnetic thin, single, and multiple layers structures. Especially those characteristics that are important to the use of these structures in digital circuitry were studied. The following accomplishments were made: (1) A multiple source evaporation system was developed; (2) Forty sets of samples were made of permalloy films with inclusioned gold; (3) The 180 degree pulse reversal time measuring equipment was modified to investigate faster reversal processes; (4) Ferromagnetic damping studies were made and compared with damping as observed in reversal experiments; (5) A detailed study of the width of a Bloch wall was made in the thickness region; and (6) Extensive treatment of the effect of crystalline anisotropy in poly-crystalline films as well as other material imperfections was made and characterized as ripple.
