Abstract : Field emission diode diagnostics were extended to include a capacitive voltage monitor which was used in conjunction with the existing current monitor to provide complete time resolved diode data. This included Z and nu/gamma as a function of time. The diode diagnostics were bench calibrated and cross-checked with the beam diagnostics with good agreement. The results of this part of the program were: data on the cathode plasma formation time for various cathodes, closure times, and impedance dependence on gap geometry. Beam energy propagation and front velocity measurements were made for beams with nu/gamma less than and greater than one. It is shown that a beam can be transported with low loss and little spectral degradation in the one Torr pressure region. Both accelerating and decelerating beam fronts were observed depending on pressure. (Author)
