Abstract : Problems relating to the fuels, lubricants and other fluids used in aircraft are again becoming a subject of current interest because of the exacting requirements to be met by aircraft and other vehicles which have to fly through the atmosphere at high speeds. With regard to fuels, in addition to the services demanded of them as heat sinks or as means of cooling the vehicle, the high performance required from engines, either turbojets or ramjets, necessitaties the use of fuels which have been suitably selected and treated. Replacing conventional liquid fuels with cryogenic liquid fuels, such as hydrogen or methane, raises special problems, but also involves characteristics which are of great interest for supersonic and hypersonic aircraft. Furthermore, very reactive products such as several compounds of boron or aluminium can be used as combustion initiators or stabilisers in very high speed flows. Industry is capable of producing lubricants which are satisfactory for the engines now being used in commercial aircraft. The development of supersonic aircraft adds greatly to the problem of lubrication, since the temperatures being reached are fast exceeding the capabilities of present day lubricants. The purpose of the work presented is to review the problems raised by the liquids used for combustion, lubrication and hydraulic transmission, which can be termed conventional pending the appearance of the quite new techniques probably required for machines of the future.
