Abstract : The problems of reliability of intermittently used shipboard equipment are both urgent and acute. This paper presents a detailed discussion of the problems and how these relate to areas beyond the engineer's control. It also reviews the engineer's responsibility in analyzing the operational and organizational influence on the system. In addition, it supports the proposition that the engineering community must take the lead in recommending to management appropriate action to solve the problems. Potential approaches to the overall problem are presented for consideration by both the engineering community and management. (Author)
