Abstract : The method to calculate the hydrodynamic entrance length in channels of constant cross-section given by Sparrow, Lin and Lundgren is extended to allow the calculation of hydrodynamic entrance lengths in channels of varying cross-section. For this extension a different physical interpretation of the mathematical simplifications is necessary. The method is restricted to cross-section variations for which asymptotically a fully developed flow exists. The method allows specification of an arbitrary initial velocity profile which develops continuously into the asymptotic profile, and guarantees that the integrated continuity, axial momentum, and mechanical energy equations are satisfied. Velocity and pressure distributions are given for two-dimensional channels and tubes for different cross-section variations. (Author)
