Abstract : The results of an experimental study of the static and dynamic hydrodynamic coefficients of two surface piercing struts are presented. The struts, one unswept and one with 20 degrees of sweep, were symmetrical with 12 percent thick, modified circular arc sections. Static tests were conducted on both struts with strut immersion depths corresponding to nominal wetted aspect ratios of 1, 2, and 3 over a yaw angle range of +10 to -10 deg for a water velocity of 25 feet per second. Both struts were tested at atmospheric pressure and with reduced ambient pressure in the channel to provide cavitation numbers of 3.3, 1.0, and 0.3. Pure sway motion dynamic tests were conducted on the unswept strut at zero yaw angle for the same range of aspect ratios and cavitation numbers as the static tests. The effects of pure swaying motion were evaluated for an amplitude ratio of 1/8 over the range of reduced frequencies from .03 to .32. (Author)
