Abstract : The stability of shells and plates is investigated on the basis of the theory of deformations, taking into account the plastic and reheonomic properties of the material. According to the theory of localization of deformations, the connection between stresses and strains at an examined point is established in an auxiliary (mobile) system of coordinates, where the deformative properties of materials in different positions of this system is described with the help of various laws. Deformations in the main axes are determined by means of the functional of averaging, which ensures invariance of deformation. The results are given of experiments with short-term and long-term and also with simple and complex loading of polymer materials and alloys used in conjunction with polymer materials to make carrying constructions. Experiments conducted and analyzed confirm the basic tenets of the theory. On the basis of obtained expressions of the function of local deformations by examination of simple and complex subcritical stresses, the stability of plates and shells is investigated during plastic deformations and creep. Theoretical results are compared with data obtained in experiments with shells made of polymer materials and alloys.
