Abstract : As a follow on to previous research on the use of the cyanogen-oxygen gaseous detonation system as a method to pump both ruby and neodymium-glass laser rods, a study was initiated to investigate the possibility of using high-brightness flames as light sources to pump laser rods in a continuous mode. The use of solid additives to the flames such as aluminum oxide, zirconium oxide, and neodymium chloride were investigated as to the possibility of increasing the light output either as a whole or selectively. The study included the investigation of the cyanogen-oxygen and aluminum-oxygen flames. Using as standards of comparison light sources which have been used to pump YAG-neodymium laser rods, it was possible to evaluate the feasibility of proposed systems to pump such rods. (Author)
