Abstract : It has been established by several investigators that heart rate is a good indicator of the energy expenditure for a given work task. Heart rate has also been shown to give quicker response to emotional involvement than do other measures of physiological cost, (e.g., oxygen uptake, carbon dioxide production, blood lactate, sweat rate, etc.). The influence of brief rest intervals during an intensive work activity has not been thoroughly investigated. The paper directs its attention to physiological recovery during brief rest intervals, using a basketball game as the intensive activity to be studied. (Author)
