Abstract : The final report describes very briefly the results of efforts to achieve selective, electrochemical reductions of organic molecules containing various functional groups. In all cases the electrolytic cell was a simple three-neck flask equipped with two platinum electrodes, a reflux condenser and lithium chloride in methylamine as the electrolyte. Successes were achieved in reducing acetylenic linkages to olefins in the presence of aromatic rings; in reducing aromatic rings to 2,5-dihydro products in the presence of olefinic double bonds; in reducing aliphatic ketones to either alcohols or N-methylamines and in reducing aliphatic amides to either alcohols or aldehydes.
