Abstract : Studies with highly selective inhibitors of mitochondrial respiration, such as amytal, rotenone and piericidin have largely contributed to elucidate the mechanism of electron transfer at the NADH-dehydrogenase region of the respiratory chain. These studies prompted a comparison of steroid effects with those of the above cited inhibitors. For that purpose, 19-nor-ethynyltestos-terone acetate (NEA) was chosen because, (1) with submitochondrial particles (Keilin-Hartree preparation), NEA is one of the most potent steroidal inhibitors of electron transfer (4), and (2) NEA is used in humans as a oral regulator of fertility.
