Abstract : Finesse is a program written to investigate the role of a generalization scheme in computer learning. The finessing play in the game of bridge is developed as an example in which the computer starts with a few basic bridge rules and improves its play through self-analysis of successive plays of the same hands. After deciding that an optimum play has been found for a particular hand, Finesse makes the generalization that all hands with approximately the same distribution should be played in the same way.
