Abstract : Reported incidents of gross contamination in some of the divers breathing air systems on board U. S. Navy ships initiated an extensive effort to minimize this condition. The methods for such minimizations have been investigated and resulting techniques are being implemented. However, the source of contamination and the resultant physiological effect in a hyperbaric environment are not well established. A symposium was held as a first step towards a more adequate definition of purity standards. The symposium covered the following topics: Physiological effects; Gas processing; Gas monitoring; and Divers support system design. (Author)
