Abstract : A passive, self-reading dosimeter for high level gamma ray monitoring has been developed. The gamma ray detecting element uses energetic Compton and photoelectron scattering in a dielectric-electrode matrix to generate the charge necessary for dose read-out. The detecting element has been designed to provide a uniform response for photons of 0.08 to 2 MeV energy and to charge an inverse-reading fiber voltmeter full scale for total doses in the range of 200 to 600 R. Evacuated, inverse-reading fiber voltmeters of suitable range have been fabricated and assembled with detecting elements to give prototype dosimeters. All prototype units were free of batteries or chargers, could be read repeatedly while in a radiation field, and showed good accuracy and repeatability. (Author)
