Abstract : An earlier report stated that the D-glucosamine units in the lipid A of Serratia marcescens were linked I to 6 and were probably in the beta configuration. Investigation of the chemical structure of lipid A, particularly the linkage between the D-glucosamine units has been extended to the lipid A of Escherichia coli and Shigella flexneri, respectively. These studies have shown that the D-glucosamine units of lipid A of both species are linked I to 4 in contrast to those of S. marcescens; the configurations are probably beta. Possible structures for both lipid A's are proposed. (Author)
